Disinfect Your Keyboard Regularly

Keyboards may contain harmful bacteria

study in 2008 found that keyboards harbor more germs than a toilet seat! Almost 50% of keyboards tested had Staphylococcus aureus, which is a harmless bacterium on the surface of the skin, but becomes lethal if it enters the body.

Over time, a workplace accumulates a number of germs and bacteria. This happens due to a number of reasons, people sneeze, eat at their workplace and touch a number of things on a busy workday. Given that computers are not routinely disinfected, the potential for transmitting disease is great.

The keyboard especially is a notorious device. It is the device we are in constant contact with and the structure of the keys, makes it impossible to clean. Most parts of the computer can be cleaned and disinfected. However no luck with the keyboard. The keyboard also needs extra care by not spilling liquids and therefore people tend to clean it only with a dry cloth.

How can you protect yourself?
People who frequently wipe down their areas with anti-bacterial products were found to reduce the bacteria count 99.9%. Wipe your keyboard, telephone and other items you touch. Also ensure the entire table is cleaned everyday. Once a week, move computers from their places and wipe the area underneath it. All disinfectants and even the sterile water control are effective at removing or inactivating more than 95% of the test bacteria, without functional or cosmetic damage to the keyboards. However ensure that water does not enter the keyboard.

Wash your hands regularly. Wash them with soap before and immediately after using the computer. Never touch your face, nose and mouth with your hands. This is a good practice even otherwise.

Whenever you sneeze or cough, ensure you cover your mouth with a handkerchief or a paper napkin and prevent germs from falling on to your workplace and keyboard.
