Fairness Creams Can Cause Severe Skin Damage
A number of people are obsessed with fair skin. Such obsession is common in many other countries in the world as well. No wonder, the cosmetic brands have tapped into this fairness obsession. Popularity and usage of fairness products has grown exponentially after celebrities have started promoting them. In India, the fairness products market is worth a whopping 700 crores (in 2010).
But do fairness creams really help? Do these celebrities really use them? Are there any side effects?
The fact is fairness creams are harmful to all. Long term use of these creams actually damage the skin. Yes you may have begun to look a tad fairer. But at what cost?
How do they work? There is evidence to suggest that some types of skin-whitening products use active ingredients (such as mercurous chloride) which can be harmful. Mercurous chloride acts as a bleach, which is what causes all the harm. Constant use of these creams causes the skin to get thinner and thereby losing its tightness. Skin also becomes prone to acne.
Fairness creams also make the skin photosensitive (sensitive to light). This makes going out in the sun more harmful causing blisters, sun burns and itchiness. Photosensitive skin also causes adverse reaction to other treatments such as oil packs, facials or massages.
Although there is very little difference between men's skin and women's skin, men's fairness creams contain more bleach making men particularly more prone to these side effects.
Bleaching only gives you temporary fairness. For better results focus on reducing pigmentation of your skin, which fairness creams do not. Also keep in mind that clear blemish free skin is more attractive than damaged fair skin.
