How to Have Healthy Bones and Prevent Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is the thinning and weakening of the bones that leads to their breaking even with minimum force. 1 out of 8 males and 1 out of 3 females in India suffers from osteoporosis, making India one of the largest affected countries in the world. By 2013, India will have 36 million cases.

Often the problem is hard to discover, coming to the fore only when a bone is fractured due to a fall so minor that it should have caused no harm.

A woman’s risk of developing an osteoporosis-related hip fracture is equal to her combined risk of developing breast  uterine and ovarian cancer.

Causes of osteoporosis:

  • Medication such as steroids and anti-seizure pills may cause weakening of the bone.
  • Excessive alcohol consumption and smoking
  • Lack of exercise
  • Vitamin D deficiency
  • Calcium deficiency

The above causes give you all the precautions you need to take to reduce your risk.

Exercise: Since osteoporosis primarily affects the hip bone and the vertebrae, experts advice weight-bearing exercises that strengthen these two areas of the body.

Go for a early morning walk or jog. Sunlight is the best source of Vitamin D

Eat calcium rich food - milk, curd, broccoli, nuts and cheese.  It is advised that women take at least 1000 mg of calcium daily, during pregnancy and post -menopause.
