Reader's Question - Is It Important to Finish Your Dinner Before 7?

This is in refernce to one of your posts.. it was written that one shud hv dinner before 7 pm n den yoghurt n salad cn b taken if wished for..ds it apply for ppl like me who stay up late night.. like sleeping at 2 or 3? d funda behind 7 pm thing is that metabolism gets slow while we r sleeeping?i guess it shudnt apply if one s not sleeping at 10 or 11 pm..

Its what you eat that matters more than when you eat. When we recommended finishing dinner by 7, we assumed a sleeping time of 10 or 11. Cooked food takes 3-4 hours to completely digest and therefore we recommended that time. Sleeping with a full stomach puts undue strain on your systems, which also leads to lethargy in the mornings. Sleep too tends to be disturbed since the body is working hard to digest food. Our recommendation had much less to do with weight loss.

On the other hand, yoghurt and salads, being raw, take much less time to digest - around 30 minutes. Your body needs around 600 calories to get through the night and therefore we recommended a healthy snack and also keeping in mind our suggestion of eating every 2-3 hours.

Its good to sleep before 12, ideally 10. But given our current lifestyles that may not be possible. Nature has created night for sleep. When we sleep the body performs a number of important functions like generation of melatonin, which fights against cancer and boosts the immune system. Read Staying awake late could lead to breast cancer.

So the small answer to your question - Sleep early. If that is not possible, eat (cooked food) at least 3 hours before sleeping. Read this for habits that may be causing fat gain.
