Sitting Too Long Increases Death Risk

Sitting too long increases death risk

A new study has found that the more time people spent sitting down, the greater their risk of death.

Women who reported more than six hours per day of sitting were 37 percent more likely to die during the time period studied than those who sat fewer than 3 hours a day. Men who sat more than 6 hours a day were 18 percent more likely to die than those who sat fewer than 3 hours per day.

There isn't an explanation nor does exercise and being active help. The risk is irrespective of the physical activity you get.

Unfortunately most of our time is spent sitting. Here are a few ways you can cut down.

  • Have stand-up meetings. The other benefit is shorter and result-oriented meetings
  • When you receive a phone call on your mobile, get up from your desk and walk
  • If you have to wait, for a place in a restaurant,  for a movie, to meet someone, for a bus or train, don't sit. Walk around.
  • In the gym, avoid sitting while exercising. Doing the same exercise standing targets your core muscles and has more benefits.
  • Take a break from your desk every 20 minutes. This helps in a number of other ways too.
  • At home, spend more time outdoors walking rather than watching TV.
