Two Nutrients To Protect Your Eyes From Aging

Tips to Prevent Your Eyes From Aging

The macula lutea is the small, yellowish central portion of the retina. It is a cluster of photoreceptors, the area providing the clearest, most distinct vision. The macular tissue however, degenerates faster than the rest of the eye, and as it does, you no longer see clearly, so you lose the ability to read and to drive. You end up seeing a big smudge in the center of everything and your risk of cataracts increase.

To keep the macular tissue from degenerating and keep your vision sharp, you need two key things: lutein and zeaxanthin!

Consuming 12 milligrams of these two nutrients can increase macular pigment density. These are obtained primarily from dark green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, collard greens, kale, mustard greens, and turnip greens. Eating spinach and collard greens five or more times a week was found to noticeably reduce the risk of macular degeneration.

These two nutrients do their job of preventing photodamage of the retina by filtering out blue light, which is not stopped by the cornea and lens, and which can damage the retina over time. They also protect the blood vessels that supply the macular region.

Consuming half a cup of cooked spinach provides you lutein and zeaxanthin you need.
