Insulin resistance and insulin hyper secretion are established features of obesity. Researchers have uncovered new evidence suggesting identical cells store widely differing amounts of fat depending on subtle variations in how cells process insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas and is responsible for processing carbohydrates that we include in our diets. Insulin helps glucose (sugars in carbohydrates) to gain entry to cells where it is turned into energy. Reduction in the capacity of cells to respond to insulin causes the pancreas to over-compensate by releasing even more insulin which lead to diabetes or obesity apart from high cholesterol and increased rates of heart disease.

Evidence suggests that too much insulin may affect the body's ability to use calories efficiently, thereby causing obesity. Increased obesity may have preceded increased insulin levels or vice versa. The solution - eat foods low in sugar and those having a low-glycemic index.
