Your Sunscreen Could Be Killing You!

According to scientists nanoparticles in sunscreens could be toxic if accidentally eaten.
Apparently an ingredient called zinc oxide, which is widely used in most sunscreens, is the cause. The smaller the size of the particle of zinc oxide the higher the toxicity. Particles smaller than 100 nanometers are twice as toxic to colon cells than larger particles.
"Unintended exposure to nano-sized zinc oxide from children accidentally eating sunscreen products is a typical public concern, motivating the study of the effects of nanomaterials in the colon," noted the scientists.
While its not possible to measure the size of zinc oxide and neither can you avoid sunscreen, a few precautions can be taken.
- Avoid products that contain zinc oxide
- Wash hands thoroughly after applying sunscreen
- Eat almonds. Apart from the numerous benefits, almonds also protect you from the harmful effects of ultra-violet rays
- Keep cosmetics out of reach of children
